Summary

Cochise County Sheriff Joanna Brady’s professional and personal lives collide when her college-age daughter is involved in a missing persons case in this evocative and atmospheric mystery in J。 A。 Jance’s New York Times bestselling suspense series, set in the beautiful desert country of the American Southwest。

When Jennifer Brady returns to Northern Arizona University for her sophomore year, she quickly becomes a big sister to her new roommate, Beth Rankin, a brilliant yet sheltered sixteen-year-old freshman。 For a homeschooled Beth, college is her first taste of both freedom and unfettered access to the internet, and Jenny is concerned that she’s too naïve and rebellious for her own good。

Her worries are well-founded because one day Beth vanishes, prompting Jenny to alert campus authorities, local police, and her mom, Sheriff Joanna Brady—who calls in a favor。 Beth is found, but Jenny’s concern has unwittingly put her in the crosshairs of a criminal bent on revenge。

With Christmas vacation approaching, and Beth at war with her parents, Jenny invites Beth to the shelter of the Brady home。 While Joanna is sympathetic, she’s caught up in a sensitive case—an officer-involved shooting that has placed the lives of two young children in jeopardy—leaving her stretched thin to help a fragile young woman recently gone missing and endangered。

In bestseller Jance’s riveting 19th novel featuring Cochise County, Ariz。, sheriff Joanna Brady (after 2018’s Field of Bones), Deputy Armando Ruiz tries to serve Leon Hogan with a no-contact order as requested by the man’s estranged wife。 Their encounter turns deadly when Leon opens fire and hits Armando, who shoots back, killing Leon。 As the hospitalized Armando fights for his life, Joanna monitors the case from afar, prohibited from actively investigating the shooting so as not to prejudice the case in favor of her deputy。 Meanwhile, Joanna’s daughter Jennifer, a sophomore at Northern Arizona University, worries about her new roommate, naive Beth Rankin, who’s caught up in an internet dating scheme。 The two parallel cases provide plenty of action while keeping a premium on character studies and violence to a minimum。 Once again, the compassionate, intelligent Joanna balances a busy home life and a complex job with aplomb。 This long-running series consistently entertains。 Agent: Alice Volpe, Northwest Literary。 (Feb。)

Missing and Endangered by J。 A。 Jance is a highly recommended procedural and the nineteenth installment of the series featuring Joanna Brady。 Joanna Brady, the sheriff of Cochise County, Arizona, has one of her officers, Deputy Armando Ruiz, shot while he was trying to serve a no-contact order to Leon Hogan。 Hogan is shot so an investigation into the shooting begins even while Ruiz is rushed into surgery。 Joanna has a feeling that more is involved in the case than what is initially evident, and she fears for the two young children who were on the scene along with Hogan's soon-to-be ex-wife。 At the same time Joanna's daughter, Jennifer is at Northern Arizona University for her sophomore year。 She is going to bring home for Christmas vacation her roommate Beth Rankin, who has a relationship with her parents。 Joanna and her husband Butch Dixon also have two younger children。 While Joanna is closely following the Hogan case as much as she can, Jennifer is increasingly concerned about Beth, who is involved with her first boyfriend via late-night phone calls。 She met him online and is clearly besot with him。 The problem is that she was sheltered from real life and is incredibly naive。 It becomes clear that Beth is in trouble, which opens up a whole other set of concerns。 This is actually my first Joanna Brady novel and I liked it。 It is a comfortable procedural that follows a predictable formula。 That isn't implying that it is not compelling, it is。 The plot is well paced and the two different story lines will hold your attention throughout the novel。 Joanna juggles a busy home life with a busy career and does her best to do everything she can to manage both。 It must also be said that she has some help to handle her home life。 Obviously, character development has occurred over many previous novels, so, although it was adequate here, those who are following the series won't need more and will like the new developments。 There was enough background provided to easily understand the character's backstory and history。 I'm certain fans of the series will love this latest novel and for those new to the series it can be read as a stand-alone novel。 (I wasn't particularity thrilled with yet another negative portrayal of homeschooling。 Get over your prejudice。 It works - and surely we've moved past this now, especially in light of the many options currently available and the many parents being thrust into the role of teacher without a lot of preparation in 2020。) Disclosure: My review copy was courtesy of HarperCollins。

Another great installment in the series which is perfectly enjoyable as a standalone! An officer involved shooting unravels a sad situation for two children and leads Sheriff Joanna Brady to find a path forward for them。 Those familiar with Brady know that she became sheriff after the shooting death of her husband, her daughter Jenny is at university, and she shares two children with her second husband Butch。 She's a tough but thoughtful woman and here she must call upon that。 Kendall and Peter' Another great installment in the series which is perfectly enjoyable as a standalone! An officer involved shooting unravels a sad situation for two children and leads Sheriff Joanna Brady to find a path forward for them。 Those familiar with Brady know that she became sheriff after the shooting death of her husband, her daughter Jenny is at university, and she shares two children with her second husband Butch。 She's a tough but thoughtful woman and here she must call upon that。 Kendall and Peter's hateful drunken mother lured their stepfather into a fight which resulted in his death and injured to Deputy Armando。 At the same time, Jenny's room mate Beth, a highly naive young woman has gone down the rabbit hole with a man she believes loves her but who turns out to be a sick creep。 The two story lines don't come together but that's ok- they are equally complex which makes this a rewarding read。 The characters- especially those kids- are terrific and Jance is a smooth storyteller。 If I have a quibble it's that the title doesn't really match the book (although arguably the children, including Jenny and Beth as well as Kendall and Peter are endangered。)。 No matter。 This has a slightly different spin on the perils of the internet and a positive message about law enforcement。 Thanks to edelweiss for the ARC。 I very much enjoyed this。 。。。more

It's been three long years since the last Joanna Brady mystery, Field of Bones, so I couldn't wait to pick up Missing and Endangered。 J。A。 Jance's series set in Cochise County, Arizona, is one of my all-time favorites and never disappoints。 Jance grew up in Bisbee, and her setting is so true-to-life you can almost follow her descriptions like a road map。 (Yes, I've been there many, many times and have followed those descriptions。)Written over twenty-eight years, this series-- so far-- describes It's been three long years since the last Joanna Brady mystery, Field of Bones, so I couldn't wait to pick up Missing and Endangered。 J。A。 Jance's series set in Cochise County, Arizona, is one of my all-time favorites and never disappoints。 Jance grew up in Bisbee, and her setting is so true-to-life you can almost follow her descriptions like a road map。 (Yes, I've been there many, many times and have followed those descriptions。)Written over twenty-eight years, this series-- so far-- describes nine years in the life of Joanna Brady, from her first becoming sheriff to now when her eldest daughter is a college sophomore。 Jance's smooth pace and narrative chops draw readers right into the story, and one of the things I admire most about it is how well it shows the daily lives of law enforcement in one sparsely populated county with an area larger than some states。 We see how budget cuts affect the department, how the sheriff's office interacts with other law enforcement agencies, and what parts paperwork and the media plays in it all。 Joanna has worked hard in her job as sheriff, gaining knowledge and experience, and one of the ways that experience pays off is in her networking skills。 She may not know the answer to something but chances are one of her contacts does-- and she does it all while juggling an extremely busy family life。One thing that I admire even more about this series than the way it portrays the daily life of a sheriff is the "people angle。" As Jenny tells her mother, "Your job is about way more than just catching bad people; it's about helping good people, too, and about putting broken lives back together。" You may be pleased to know that, in this series, Jance concentrates more on the good people and putting lives back together than she does on the criminals。 In Missing and Endangered, readers can feel a sense of dread crawling up their spines at Beth Rankin's naivete。 Their hearts can break over two little children who face becoming lost in a system of bureaucracy。 But they can also rest assured that Joanna Brady is going to do everything in her power to make things right。 It was three long years since the last Brady mystery, but I found that I hadn't forgotten a thing。 This is the type of series with the kind of characters that sticks with you。 If you doubt you'll pick this book up because it's book number nineteen and you just don't want to invest that kind of time in a long-running series, well。。。 as much as I want you to read all nineteen books, I will say that you can pick this one up and read it as a standalone。 The subplot concerning an officer-involved shooting has Joanna thinking about many incidents from her past, so the backstory is there and you won't feel confused。Missing and Endangered is vintage Jance, and now I'm back to cooling my heels until my next visit with one of my favorite sheriffs, Joanna Brady。 But no matter how long, I know it will be worth the wait。 。。。more

Joanna Brady is back and better than ever。 The character development in this series continues to be top notch -- and not just for Joanna。 Her family and county employees are not forgotten。 As is usual for a book in this series, there is not much time for Joanna to coast。 She has a key employee retiring, an officer involved in a shooting, concerns about an unfit mother, misogynist men from other agencies to deal with, and then her daughter's roommate is the victim of sextortion。 I breezed through Joanna Brady is back and better than ever。 The character development in this series continues to be top notch -- and not just for Joanna。 Her family and county employees are not forgotten。 As is usual for a book in this series, there is not much time for Joanna to coast。 She has a key employee retiring, an officer involved in a shooting, concerns about an unfit mother, misogynist men from other agencies to deal with, and then her daughter's roommate is the victim of sextortion。 I breezed through this one and all things were tied up quite neatly by the end。 One thing I am confused about, though, is the title。 It just does not seem to fit with the narrative as a whole。 The book itself, though, is one of the best so far and as the wife of a LEO and mother of one as well, I appreciate books that shed light on what it is like to work in that world。Thank you to William Morrow and Edelweiss+ for a DRC in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Joanna Brody is the elected sheriff in Cochise County, Arizona。 She has a lot of background, like her police officer first husband was killed in the line of duty and she was elected sheriff before she went through the police academy。 There are two main story lines in this book。 Leon Hogan is being served with a no-contact order by his estranged wife, Madison, when all hell breaks loose。 Deputy Armando Ruiz is shot while Leon, who appeared the sherifff to be intoxicated, is killed。 Joanna arrives Joanna Brody is the elected sheriff in Cochise County, Arizona。 She has a lot of background, like her police officer first husband was killed in the line of duty and she was elected sheriff before she went through the police academy。 There are two main story lines in this book。 Leon Hogan is being served with a no-contact order by his estranged wife, Madison, when all hell breaks loose。 Deputy Armando Ruiz is shot while Leon, who appeared the sherifff to be intoxicated, is killed。 Joanna arrives on the scene and gets the sense that all is not right, especially when the Hogan’s two young children are found locked in a bedroom。 The investigation, including a lot of politics, reveals that Joanna’s feelings were right, but how right, and why? Story line two involves Joanna’s daughter by her first husband, Jenny, a student at Northern Arizona University。 Jenny’s roommate, Beth, is a naive freshman who has been sheltered from the modern world (think cell phone, internet, and even television) by her overbearing mother。 Beth finds her first boyfriend online, and although she has never met him, she thinks she is in love and will do anything he asks。 When Jenny is drawn into Beth’s dating world, Joanna must get involved in tracking down who Beth has met, and what are his intentions? This is the 19th book in Jance’s Joanna Brody series, and the first that I have read。 As those who have read my reviews in the past know, I generally like to read a series in order, but it was not necessary in this case。 While there are characters and events that clearly occurred in earlier books, there was plenty of background to avoid feeling lost。 This book had plenty of action, twists, and surprises, with Brody being a very likable and competent protagonist。 Jance is obviously a good storyteller - she has three other series with 27, 18 and 6 books in them, and I look forward to reading more of her work。 My thanks to HarperCollins Publishers and NetGalley for the ARC of this book。 。。。more

In Missing and Endangered, J。A。Jance returns the reader to the world of Sheriff Joanna Brady in Bisbee, Arizona。 She skillfully weaves the story of Joanna’s most recent departmental challenge of solving an officer-involved shooting with a totally unrelated mystery involving her daughter Jennifer and her roommate at Northern Arizona University。 As the story unfolds, the reader is treated to glimpses of the Sheriff’s warm but chaotic family life and reconnects with many Sheriff’s Department employ In Missing and Endangered, J。A。Jance returns the reader to the world of Sheriff Joanna Brady in Bisbee, Arizona。 She skillfully weaves the story of Joanna’s most recent departmental challenge of solving an officer-involved shooting with a totally unrelated mystery involving her daughter Jennifer and her roommate at Northern Arizona University。 As the story unfolds, the reader is treated to glimpses of the Sheriff’s warm but chaotic family life and reconnects with many Sheriff’s Department employees and family friends and neighbors met in previous installments of this long-running mystery series。 While this story may not be the most dramatic and exciting of the series, Jance’s skill at creating characters who the reader hopes will either appear in future adventures with Sheriff Brady or will meet the fate they deserve make this book a satisfying and memorable read。#MissingandEndangered #NetGalley 。。。more

Netgalley provided me with a free ebook in exchange for an unbiased and honest opinion。First of all, I am a fan of J。A。Jance's Joanna Brady series。 These novels are set in southern Arizona, the main character is a strong woman in what is typically "a man's world" though that is definitely changing。 Joanna deals with many issues that face women today。 Another thing I like about her books is that contemporary issues are approached while not being preachy。 In Missing and Endangered, Jance is addres Netgalley provided me with a free ebook in exchange for an unbiased and honest opinion。First of all, I am a fan of J。A。Jance's Joanna Brady series。 These novels are set in southern Arizona, the main character is a strong woman in what is typically "a man's world" though that is definitely changing。 Joanna deals with many issues that face women today。 Another thing I like about her books is that contemporary issues are approached while not being preachy。 In Missing and Endangered, Jance is addressing issues of sexting/cybersex (nothing graphic in the book) and domestic violence where the perpetrator is a woman。Missing and Endangered is Jance's 19th book in the Joanna Brady series。 I recommend you read them in order as characters continue to grow and develop throughout the series。 One other thing I find fascinating about this series is how Jance continues reflect each era appropriately throughout the series and this is most evident in the changes in technology。I highly recommend this book。 I think it is one of the best in this series。#MissingandEndangered #NetGalley 。。。more

This one kept me up well into the night, and I was determined to finish it in one sitting! If you’re a fan of her series, this book will not disappoint – and if you’re new to her writings, this is a great place to start, as each can be read as a stand-alone。 Bet ya can’t read just one though!! 。。。more

I’m a huge fan of this series and this story in my opinion was one of the better ones。 The characters are wonderful and the storylines never disappoint。 The mystery and suspense surrounding the cases suck you in and keep you on your toes。 Not to mention the twists and surprises that get thrown in。 If you love a good police drama make sure you add this to your list。
